Homeownership

HOW TO QUALIFY FOR A HABITAT HOME:

Habitat homeowners are active participants in building a better home and future for themselves and their families.

  • Prospective Habitat homeowners demonstrate a need for safe, affordable housing.
  • Once selected, Habitat homeowners partner with us throughout the process.  This partnership includes performing 400 hours of "sweat equity".  To fulfill sweat equity hours, homeowners:
    • Work alongside volunteers to help build and renovate the places they will call home OR work to help build or renovate the homes of others in our homeownership program.
    • Sweat Equity can also include volunteer work in our Westwood Habitat ReStore.
  • Future homeowners are also required to attend financial education and budget-planning classes.
  • Homeowners must also be financially able to support the mortgage.
  • Mortage payments are cycled back into the community to help build additional Habitat houses.

CAN ANYONE APPLY TO BE A HABITAT HOMEOWNER?
